It’s a time of prayer and rejuvenation. A child is born in nine months. These nine days are like coming out of a mother’s womb once again. Having a new birth.”
Navratri, or the Divine Nine Nights, is a time of deep rest and rejuvenation. Each day is dedicated to one of the nine forms of the Mother Divine. The final day, the 10th day, is called Vijaydashami, the day popularly celebrated as the day of the victory of good over evil but it is really the sattva winning over the other gunas, the one consciousness expressing itself.
On the occasion of the auspicious festival of Navratri, people install small and big garbas in their homes. This clay garba is dissolved after the completion of Navratri. There is no harm to the environment due to this discharge of clean soil. Which also has to do with creation and dissolution.
The original Sanskrit word is derived from garbhadeep. Garba has 27 holes. Three lines of 9 holes means a total of 27 holes which are related to 27 Nakshatras. Since a nakshatra has four legs, multiplying it by four gives a number of 108. In Navratri, circling 108 times with Mana Garba in between gives the virtue of circumambulating the universe. This is why playing Garba or Raas is important in our culture.
